Re: Old flat set in South Dublin auction

Oooh! Nice but a huge restoration job. Some might say "why restore it ? Just keep it for the original technical information it contains." BUT, surely a musical instrument is all about making music ? Description says the mainstock is Rosewood... but looks more like Boxwood to me, which wou...

Re: Mad Max's Generation

I’ll gladly start a new discussion headed, say, From flageolet to tin whistle , if others see some utility in bringing the topic out from under its current Mad Max cloak. I'd vote for that, stringbed, and I imagine Mad Max will be glad to see us go too. And we're seeing too much interesting materia...

Re: Tiny white animals on the flute inside the case

These are mites. Some are ´dust´ mites. There seem to be a multitude of clades of these little beasties. One thing they cannot stand is paradichlorobenzene and naphtha. . .yup, old fashioned ´mothballs´. Mothballs are toxic to people as well as mites, but some small shavings left in your instrument ...

Re: Blackwood flute bitter taste

If you are taking any Oral medicines or using Eye Drops of some kind, I would look up the medicines side effects. Various medicines can cause bitter or metallic Side effects. Just a thought :poke: I would second Ben´s thought. I would also watch to see if this correlates with anything you may have ...

Re: Aging/darkening of Mopane, Boxwood, and other non-blackwoods?

Tangentially, I would add to this discussion that all vegetation, wood and trees included, are profoundly involved with their relationship to light. Chlorophyll is perhaps the most photoreactive chemical in a tree, but certainly not the only one. The majority of the photosynthesis takes place in the...

Peter, these ´senior moments´ are killing me. You are right. On checking, the lady involved was Veronica MacNamara, and she was indeed referring to Morrison, who was her teacher.

Re: The flute and Irish history

Can´t add much about Michael Coleman. Somewhere I have an interview, conducted by Rag and Bone of Clare FM of an older lady, a former pupil of Michael Coleman. The lady always referred to Michael Coleman as ´The Professor´. In the Sean Reid Society Files there was some mention by Brother Gildas desc...

David Daye´s yer man. He did work on this before working with your fellow Aussie Craig Fischer developing the ´Squinter´, a square bored uilleann chanter.

Re: Hot Weather Performing

Byll, there are people who suffer from Palmar Hyperhidrosis which is a nine-dollar term for ´very sweaty hands´. There are some over the counter anti-perspirants available to help counteract this condition. Two products are Carpe Max and Dry Hands. Might these help?

Since you ask: There is a rather extensive ´sticky´ thread here of Youtube whistle-playing and background of the basis for the aesthetics.viewtopic.php?f=1&t=49647 This is really a fascinating and enjoyable resource.

Re: Suggestions for 8-key D flutes

As has already been mentioned, there are some hybrid 8 key flutes that utilized the Boehm foot mechanism. I have a post and axle ´dealer´s´ flute approximately 140 years old. Oddly enough, it appears to have been optimised to about A=435 hz so has relatively excellent intonation. Keep looking, you n...

Re: The Irish Flute Shop at the End of the Universe?

Terry, I would commend the play Female Transport for your pleasure. I believe ´Compelling´ is a good descriptor of this play. There are clips, and even a full length video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVGujQrjuJ0 ) of the play on Y*ut*be. The drama is set aboard one of the penal transportation s...

Re: The flute and Irish history

Ah, well, I confess, living out here on the western edge of the States I still use archaisms. :D My maternal Grandfather was born in 1876 and passed away in 1965, so the verbal time-machine is quite familiar. When he was confused about something he would declare he was unsure ´if he was on foot or o...

Re: The flute and Irish history

Yes, Terry, as you said, evidence on the ground for better flutes in Ireland is spotty and anecdotal. Mike Rafferty as a young´un, before emigrating to the states was exposed to a variety of transverse instruments. He learned on a fife for the village band. Mike´s father before him played the flute ...
