Re: Beginner flute upgrade: Galeon or Copley?

You're going to experience a huge difference going to a Copley. Copley flutes are absolutely outstanding - and I say this as someone who also owns an Olwell and a Grinter. Copleys are top-class flutes.

It's amazing to see this thread still going so many years later... it's like a time machine back to better days.

Re: Developing your playing style

I'm going to be direct. If you want to learn how to play Irish traditional music well, then you need to learn from someone who both plays it well and teaches it well - not by trying to figure it out yourself, and not from 99.9% of people here on Chiff & Fipple. Unless you live near someone who i...

Seriously, just join the Online Academy of Irish Music, start from the beginning, and work your way through. You can thank me later. https://www.oaim.ie/

Re: Provocation: Can you learn Flute in less than 5 years?

For sure. You can become a pretty decent player in 5 years if you focus and learn the right way. In my opinion, the best option for most people is The Online Academy of Irish Music - https://www.oaim.ie/ . If you follow their progression, and you're disciplined about actually doing it, you'll be fly...

I have a Delrin Copley. I love it. (I also have a wooden Copley, an Olwell, a Grinter, and a Doyle)

Re: Grey Larsen Books - wich one

If you want to play in an authentic Irish traditional style, then your best bet is to learn from the Online Academy of Irish Music - https://www.oaim.ie/

And if you insist on learning from a book, then the best option is Mary Bergin - http://maryberginwhistle.com/tutor.html

Q: Travelling from Aus to the USA with a blackwood flute?

Hey gang - I'm going to be travelling from Australia to the USA in the next several days, and I'm confused about how CITES works. I intend to bring my blackwood flute with me as a carry-on. Will I face any obstacles in doing so? How about when I travel back to Australia from the USA? Thanks!

Re: CITES updates and Wood Samples needed

Sorry for the ignorant question here - but what, if anything, is the effect of this for me travelling with my own wooden flute? I live in Australia now and plan to fly to the USA in June or July, and then back to Australia. Am I likely to run into any trouble?

I'm amused by this discussion about flutes being "loud." Honestly, what well-made flute isn't loud?
