Re: Sean McKiernan CD

Looks like a release to benefit charities. Mick Ear Nin is probably the phonetic translation of McKiernan :D .

I know nothing else about it.

Re: Beo

Thanks Peter for the heads up. I was a bit dubious about how pipes pitched in B and C would combine well with a tuned down banjo (or any banjo for that matter). However its mighty music alright. They actually play well together as a duet (a testament to the skill of both musicians). Definitely to be...

I hadn't seen that recording either. Thanks for that. The flute player with Bobby and Mikey was Roger Sherlock.

Nice to see a few of the old faces in the photos. Thanks Peter for that.

Great seeing Michael o'hAllmhain there. He taught me how to play the tin whistle over 45 years ago now.

Keep up the good work.

Re: Upcoming book: No better boy

I got a copy of the Paddy Canny book from the library to see what it was like before I bought it.

Not my cup of tea at all. I felt very uncomfortable around some of the personal details that were mentioned in the book.

Re: Seán Keane - RIP

Very sad news indeed. Sean was definitely one of the giants of Irish Music and fiddle playing in particular. He was also a lovely gentle man. When Peadar O'Loughlin ran the B session in Hillarys' he would be found in the corner, listening away and chatting with everyone. I see that the NPU have put ...

Re: Upcoming book: No better boy

Am looking forward to getting both books. When I started playing music I lifted a lot of tunes from Chris Droney. Even today, with all the absolutely wonderful concertina players around, I'm still drawn back to Chris' playing. Surprisingly his versions of tunes fits the pipes quite well and I regula...

I have the lp and may have digitised it for someone years ago, If this thread is anything to go by I must have done something but I am not sure I still have the files or that I even did more than a few tracks. I will have a look but am not making any promises. A later iteration of the group, after ...

I still have a whistle and a bombarde by them, that haven't seen use for decades.
Not many pipers admit to having a bombarde :D . Is this some secret fetish of yours? :o
Practising the bombarde would be ene way to scare off the cattle :)

Re: New book/cd : Sound your A : Ennistymon Bands 40s-60s

Thanks Peter - All fine here. Both Sunday's at Lenas and Joe Doyle's new book landed here for Christmas. The Sunday at Lenas is an excellent tome. I'm enjoying the recordings that came with the book. I never came across Paddy Grogan before but he is a very accomplished and tasteful musician. Mary ha...

Thanks Mr G for bringing this to my attention. This shall be moving to the top of the list of must buys for 2023. And listening to Paddy Byrt on the website was a surprising delight. In one of the pictures a fiddler is named Tom Ward. Hardly the Tom ward of the downfall fame? Anyway, hope you have a...

Re: New book,/cd : Beauty an Oileáin

The past really is a different country, isn't it? The films that were included in the newsitem only drive that home. Interesting too they got this on the main news, its not like there's nothing else going on in the world. An they have the Taoiseach launching it tonight too. They seem to have a lot ...
