My new flute (kelyess Olwell, yadda yadda)

Hi, gang: I know this is not a particularly original post but wanted to share my impressions anyway. I have been playing an old Murray for several years now while waiting for my 6-key Olwell. I decided last year to get a keyless while I waited, since Patrick said I could swap a keyless middle sectio...

Hi all: I knew Sam when I lived in Belfast in 1988-9, and ordered one of his flutes then, which still plays well. Sam is indeed a lovely man, very sweet, and impossible to deal with. I second those who have said that you have to deal with him in person to get any reasonable service. Some won't mind ...

Thanks, everybody.

Michael, you replied to my posting to IRTRAD. I'll be living in Westwood so Finn McCool's sounds like the one.

Just got my E-flat, too. I love it! It seems a lot easier to play than my Murray.

Yes, I agree that it's the player before the flute. That's why I listed them all.

Come West along the Road

Hi all: For those of us in NYC, today was a great day. Niall Keegan, Joanie Madden, Mike Rafferty, Jack Coen, Dermot Grogan, Fintan Vallely, and Brian Holleran all appeared onstage together at this festival/conference (with the tune title above) at NYU. They all played a few tunes together, and each...

Hi:

Yes, Mike Rafferty is still actively teaching and is easy to get to from central NJ. He's near Hackensack. His lessons consist mainly of teaching tunes, so if that's what you want, he's the man.

Hi all: Here's some advice I got from my sister the professional flute player. If you snap the fingers of your right hand down as you play the low D, especially when you're approaching it from a much higher note like a B, it seems to help make the low D speak. Don't know why, though I suspect that i...

Yes, obviously some people are more "gifted," musically and otherwise, than others. I'm just saying that, for most of western history, and the histories of other parts of the planet, the amount of musical ability possessed by a particular individual has mattered less than the simple fact t...

Hi all: I'm in total agreement with those who say: just have fun. Making music is one of life's great pleasures. If I could be an academic for a moment, I would point out that the concept of talnet is an invention of western European culture; talent isn't "natural." If it were, you'd find ...

Hi all: As many of you know, I visited Patrick a few weeks ago. The wait is officially 5-6 years for a keyed flute. Here are some prices from the list he gave me (dated March 2001 but he's still using it): Keyless rosewood: $550 Keyless boxwood: $650 Keyless blackwood with nickel tuning slide and ri...
