FS: Sam Murray Flute

Hello again, Three modifications regarding the offer of the Sam Murray Flute I am selling: 1) The flute might be made rather of African Blackwood than Ebony, I am not quite sure. (Thanx for the friendly pointer I received.) 2) If interested, please contact me via e-mail (bee.tune@googlemail.com). PM...

FS: Sam Murray Flute SOLD

Hello all, I am selling this keyless ebony flute in D that was made by Sam Murray in Belfast about 35 years ago. The condition is like new. It has been periodically oiled to keep it in good condition. There are no cracks, and no repairs are required. I'm parting with the flute because, sadly, I neve...

Re: Lament for Owen Roe

Thanks for your thoughts so far. Did we even have the internet in 2003? * .... Modem-time, was it? I recently listened to a contemporary piece by Ferran Cruixent, "Binary for 2 Pianos" (2015), two grand pianos and modem sounds in it. Weird :) I learned an air by this name from a Dolores Ke...

Re: Household products useful to a piper.

an seanduine wrote:... walnut oil ... will go rancid eventually, and it is a drying oil, so using too much can lead to a build up.

Bob
Does that also apply to almond and linseed oil?
I'm thinking of wooden whistles and flutes.

Re: Low-D-mania

Hi Mr.Nate, I had the chance to take over an MK Kelpie four weeks ago. It's well in tune for my ears, and breathing requirement's just fine for me (higher notes in upper octave yet a bit demanding, but I'm feeling my way into it and by now can even hit the third octave in good moments). No matter if...

Re: Low-D-mania

For a female with potentially small hand spread and finger diameter I would be more concerned right now about the hole spacing and size of the holes I can second that. I found a good Low D whistle suitable for my smallish hands - and only that provided me with the freedom to work on sound, breathin...

Re: Low-D-mania

You owe it to yourself to get an MK and a Goldie in your hands (whether bought or borrowed) and spend a large amount of time playing them both. I can only agree :) Having my hands on an MK Kelpie now (what a sound and volume!) I still want to try out a Goldie and many many more. By the way, my MK K...

Re: Which Low D Whistle with smaller holes (than Howard) ?

Just a short update: I got me an MK Kelpie for now, and am happy to be indeed able to cover all the holes with piper's grip, a good starting point for me. If only I could play better yet to bring the instrument's full capacity to life, because it really has got spirit  a fine whistle. By now I...

Re: Of interest to British iPlayer viewers

Thank's for that link, MarshMan.

Unfortunately I can't watch it, but maybe it turns up on youtube sometime.

On Sunday evenings Colum Sands presents 'Folk Club' on bbc radio ulster, 19:03 o'clock. Worth listening to, a mixture of old and new, sometimes something appeals.

Greetings,
Ellen

Re: Which Low D Whistle with smaller holes (than Howard) ?

Dixon: Hole 2 .329 Hole 5 .387 MK: Hole 2 .349 Hole 5 .413 Ah, thank you, that helps. So the Low Ds compare as follows: - MK Kelpie: 2nd hole 0,349 in (0,89 cm); 5th hole 0,413 in (1,05 cm) - Dixon TB012D: 2nd hole 0,329 in (0,84 cm); 5th hole 0,387 in (0,98 cm) - Howard: 2nd hole 0,492 in (1,25 cm...
