Re: Low D, seems to be popular
For me, it's just the mellow haunting sound.

Re: NAF out of tune
This NAF has plays the natural scale (322222), plus a few accidentals. It's a little different, but I have been able to noodle out some tunes from my whistle repetoire, such as Suo Gan and The South Wind.

NAF out of tune
I have a NAF that's supposed to be in Bb (A#), but the root is almost a half step sharp. All the other notes are fine. Is there anything I can do to tweak this flute so that the root is in tune? (I can't send it back to the maker.)

Re: Minor pentatonic tunes
A mode with a minor 3rd (1, 3, 4, 5, 7) is what I was thinking about. I will take a look at Wayfaring Stranger.
Since you mention NAF, can you suggest any Celtic tunes that might translate well?

Re: In search of good NAF
Butch Hall gets good reviews, and I have played a few flutes by Michael Graham Allen (Coyote Oldman). They are very nice, but pricey -- $140 and up.

Metal body Native American flutes
I recently start playing Native American flute. While comparing the flute with my low D whistle, I have become intrigued with the idea of a NAF made of aluminum. Have any of the flute makers here tried to make a Native American style flute with a metal body?

Re: long, held notes
Listen to some Native American Flute music. The common style uses lots of long notes, with all kinds of interesting articulations, including bends. I have been successful at playing in the same style on the low whistle, but not so much on the high whistle.

Meditation sheet music
Lately I have wanted to play meditative type music on my low D. So, I looked for Native American and Indian raga sheet music, but I can't find any for free. Does anyone have any suggestions for meditation music?

If your Dixon low D is tunable, check the mouthpiece for air leakage. My low D aluminum had that problem. The seal between the two pieces of the mouthpiece was not good, and there was a slight wobble. So, depending on the angle at which I held the whistle, air would leak out and cause low notes to e...

Converting flute to whistle
A friend gave me a bamboo flute in G, and I'm thinking that it would make a neat whistle. What would be the best way to convert the flute to an end-blown whistle-type instrument? Has anyone attempted this type of hack before?

I have a lot of Dixon whistles. I really like his work, especially for the price. one-piece polymer - I agree with you. It's a little edgy in the 2nd octave. But, it's not at all plastic-y or squeaky like a Susato. I keep this one in my backpack or car. tunable polymer w/ brass slide - This one is a...
