Re: Name your poet(s)

Billy Collins is my current favorite. I find myself often writing a poor man's imitation of Collins.

You probably haven't read enough poetry then. Lots of non-heavy, dark, somber stuff but you're right most of it can be.

Re: The fine points of executing taps

The converse thing I'll do too (which I learned from an experienced player) is on cuts to slightly press down before lifting off, almost like bending your knees before jumping, to get a cleaner separation

If you want to learn by ear on the D whistle Joanie Madden's 'Songs of the Irish Whistle' has it. I've been working on that version for a while

Re: So long, Facebook, I didn't hardly know ya.

FB would probably be a dying fad if only kids used it. But now their parents and grandparents use it and these people will probably keep it alive in some fashion, even if the cool people have moved on to a place where they can talk about their boyfriends and girlfriends and post pics of puking in th...

Re: beheading an oak

I have found the Oaks to be sometimes very hard to behead. I do the freezer/ hot water thing, and I tightly wrap 3 or 4 rubber bands on the barrel and a couple on the head for better grip and a little better torque. This helps a lot. When I had a Hoover Whitecap made for an Oak, Mack had me send him...

Re: What mode/key please

The abc you gave is in A mixolydian, A is clearly the base note, and the scale notes are the same as D major, therfore A mixolydian. In the Youtube clip Loreena McKennit sings it in D mixolydian, scale notes are same as in G major. Mixolydian is like a major scale, but with a flattened seventh. So ...

Re: Books you've read and re-read...

I am a fairly slow reader for some reason, and there are so many books I want to read that I simply do not re-read books. Having said that, I did re-read 'Johnny got His Gun' a year ago, the first time being when I was in high school. Iwanted to see if it affected me the same as it did then. Not so ...
