Re: learning Irish on the internet

Duolingo now has an Irish language learning course .. it's in Beta format at the moment but so far so good. AND it's free!! https://www.duolingo.com I'm afraid I can't recommend Duolingo at all...not judging by the number of puzzled people who have come to me with odd constructions from that progra...

Re: Naming a boat

I would go with "sean nós," and I wouldn't hyphenate it. You'll see it that way, but the standard way of writing it is as two words, not as a compound.

Pronounced "shan" (rhymes with "pan") "nohss"

Re: To all irish speakers, I need a short translation

OK, I can hear it now. She says "Anseo sa ??? beidh píosa ceoil againn. Seo againn na Fianna agus casaidh siad rogha port chugann" The bit I can't hear sounds like "Le Dame de Bellini", which I take it is the name of the venue (or something like it anyway!) Anyway, what she's sa...

Re: On the radio tomorrow!

I didn't see this until too late. But I found the show you were on: http://blogs.kusp.org/continentaldrift/ You can listen to the latest show there (probably until next Saturday). I found the first song (Rug Muire) around 47 minutes in, after an interview. Lovely stuff. I love few things more than ...

Re: Tradisiun

Red ... I'm wondering, why then does the u in traidisiún take a fada? Wouldn't it be closer to the English pronunciation without it? Or is it simply the spelling convention to represent the English -tion ending as -siún? My guess is it's a back-spelling from "traidisiúnta" (traditional).....

Re: Tradisiun

Start first with the proper spelling and marks: traidisiún . In Irish, these things absolutely count when it comes to pronunciation, but the result will often vary according to regional custom. I'm guessing a reasonable "generic" go at it would be something around "TRAD yish oon"...

Re: So...anyone ever flown with a Harpsicle?

Tor...here's a graphic example of why the Harpsicle fits in an overhead bin and most similarly sized harps won't. The harp on the right is the Harpsicle in its case. The harp on the left is my Dreamsinger Bard, also cased. The Bard has the same number of strings (more closely spaced) as the Harpsicl...
