Doh! Forgot Linsey's website http://www.linseypollak.com/
Also misspelled his first name. I work with a Lindsey and slipped up.

Re: Djura Gaida technique question
Hi Ausdag, Sorry I'm weighing in a bit late, I haven't been following C&F much recently. Looks like you're trying to learn djura gajda on your own without a teacher, which is possible but not easy, since a lot of stuff isn't written down. For example, most gajda music, be it Thracian (djura), Rh...

Re: Djura Gaida question
Minor addition to the getting the flea hole working on the lower notes. The tongue also needs to be slightly trapezoidal with the narrow part at the top. Even so, it's damned difficult to get working on a D chanter. I usually half hole when I need those notes. G chanter is not as difficult and my A ...

If you still have that Musette I might be interested, and I'm in Seattle.
So what's a PM?

Don't know if you're still interested (been 5 years) but a good contact with a lot of other gajda players is the eefc.org mailing list. There are a bunch of us that track it. I track this forum too, don't know how I missed you earlier.

Re: Tuning Kaba Gaida
Pulling out (or pushing in) the reed changes the relative pitch of the chanter. Pulling out lowers the upper few (2-3 depends on the chanter) notes relative to the lower (because it increases the volume of air resonating slightly which has more effect on the high notes as the relative change in volu...

Re: Anthony Baines
"Union pipe" has nothing to do with Unionists. It has to do with the drones sharing the same stock. It's a technical term used to distinguish that form of pipe from pipes like the Highland pipes where every drone has a separate stock. A Scottish small pipe is also a Union pipe, as is a Nor...

Re: Anthony Baines
The subject of bagpipe history is full of a lot of misinformation and guess work. Not too surprising since they were "common" instruments and therefore not mentioned much in the histories of the time (whatever time you choose). Given that, my feelings, after reading all of the books mentio...

Re: Adding Silver to Highland Pipes--Need Advice
You basically need to be a jeweler to make the silver successful and a reasonably good turner to get the mounts on right. It's a rare combination. If you want to learn, take a jewelry class to learn to cast & engrave and then a tuning class to learn how to spindle turn. Then practice on a bunch ...

Re: vibrating bags
I doubt there is a tonal difference. Sound doesn't penetrate the surface (which is why David Daye's brass penny chanters sound as good as excellent Uilleann chanters) and doesn't care what shape the space it is resonating in is, which is why plywood square box bass recorders sound as good as expensi...
