Re: Considering a trip to Brittany (Bretagne / Breizh) in Aug'10

Yep, Rennes is a good one, too - not too far from Mt St.Michel, some great other northern places such as Cap Frehel, or the forest of Broceliande with, a.o., the Merlin's grave. You shouldn't miss the chance, however, to get deep into the West as well. A month, beginning with Lorient, should give Yo...

Re: Considering a trip to Brittany (Bretagne / Breizh) in Aug'10

Whew, now we're getting to the complicated questions... Well - I've always been camping for the FIL, so I really don't know... Cheapest way may be one of bthose motels, Formule 1 and stuff - try to contact the local Office de tourisme, guess, it's still early enough... To really have fun in Brittany...

Re: Considering a trip to Brittany (Bretagne / Breizh) in Aug'10

Well - beer in the Pubs is pretty expensive - that's the bad news. The good news: Everything else! I've been there almost every summer for the last 22 years... In Summertime, almost anywhere anytime, You'll have "Fest-Noz" ("Night-Parties"), that's Ceilidh-dancing the Breton way,...

Re: Pastoral Pipes.

The Disarming Act has been widely ovverated considering its influence on the bagpipe. Actually, only ONE piper is reported to EVER have been condemned in its consequence - and that was, because he was directly involved into fighting. You may read all of this in Gibson's "Traditional Gaelic Bagp...

Re: Best electric guitar solo in a folk or trad peformance

My suggestion would be "Magnus Memory" on Slàinte Mhat's 2002 album "Va" - the Dobro-solo, played with just a weeeee bit of nice electric distortion, is simple, but extremely effective - giving the whole just the simply perfect arrangement!

Re: Influence of bag on reeds.

Probably it's rather the moisture-control-system that influences Your cane-reed. If You don't have SEVERE problems with slobbering while playing, throw it in the bin - no moisture-control needed with Gore/Bannatyne - rather the danger would be, that it's TOO dry for cane-reeds (, as You probably jus...

Re: Maltese Zaqq

@Yuri: Of course, Launeddas - or the very Launedda-like, 3-pipe-instrument You see on the side of an Irish 10th(?)c. HighCross had drones before - the ancient Greeks even seem to have had a drone at some point, or, as a Helenistic statuette from Egypt (2nd c. b.C.), in the Pergamon-museum of Berlin ...

Re: Maltese Zaqq

I looked it up at Gioielli's book again, double-checked with Broemse, finally took a look at my own Diple, and folks: I WAS WRONG!!! :tomato: In fact, it seems to be a typical feature of ALL the diple/mih/surle-type-bagpipes of Croatia, that they do have the LOW notes on the left hand, and the HIGH ...

Re: Folk Metal and other such stuff

It's more about Vikings, I guess... "Pagan"-metal is very much about "Blood, Pride & Glory", so it quite often turns into the direction "Our nation/region/culture/religion/race is superior to any other" - that's where the NS-part starts. Also, very often these bands...

Re: Maltese Zaqq

How about historic Ciarramedde/Zampogne a Paro? On which side did they have which holes? I remember, the oldest pictures/carvings of Zampogne were, in fact, a Paro, so it would be worth checking - maybe they just switched the sides later to make real polyphonic thinking easyer? Also it might be wort...

Seriously - Gore is even better than leather to keep humidity low. I think, the Ross-system is - unless You remove the anti-humidity-stuff very regularly - absolutely contra-productive. With Gore-bag, You won't need ANY anti-humidity-system - not even in wet Scotland! ;-)

Re: Maltese Zaqq

...now that You mention it - on my Z. a Chiave, the bass-chanter IS on the left hand! I never noticed! :boggle: Most probably, because I thought very differently while playing, than on the Ciarramedda (two droned, You're right) or the Surdullina! Because of the equal chanter-lenght, it feels, while ...

Re: Maltese Zaqq

Yes, it does have the Zig-Zag-cut-Cowhorn (It's rather almost an entire horn with a little space left for the chanter, than just a bell... :D ). And - yes and no - of course, the chanter itself is in the hole, where the poor goat's head used to be, so in the centre. And when You look at it from the ...

Re: Maltese Zaqq

Just a week ago, Ruben sent me the Zaqq-chanter he'd prepared for me - so as soon as I'll find the time (which will be somewhat after Easter for a pastor :boggle: ), I'll make an entire Zaqq out of it (got goatskin, blowpipe and some tassel-stuff in the Maltese-style here). It has the same 5 left 1 ...
